- Determine the number of death certificates you will need. The funeral home will order these for you.
- Make a list of immediate family members, close friends, employer or business colleagues. Notify each by phone.
- Decide on appropriate memorial to which donations may be made - such as church, Hospice, library, charity or school.
- Gather obituary information, such as occupation, memberships held, military service, outstanding work and list of survivors in immediate family. The funeral home will compose the obituary and submit it to the newspapers and radio stations.
- Arrange for family members or close friends to take turns answering the door and telephone, keeping careful record of calls.
- If Social Security checks are automatic deposit, notify the bank of the death.
- Arrange for childcare, if necessary.
- Select pallbearers. Avoid anyone with a heart ailment or back problems, or make them honorary pallbearers.
- Locate life insurance policies. The funeral home will file these claims for you.
- Locate the will and notify your lawyer.
- Check promptly on all debts and installment payments, including credit cards. Some may carry insurance clauses that will cancel them. If there is to be a delay in meeting payments, consult with creditors and ask for more time before the payments are due.
