Obituary for Anna Mae Currans (Gillispie)

Anna Mae Gillispie Currans born July 16, 1923, to Charley and Nannie Gillispie in Hinton, Kentucky, transitioned to her home in Paradise on March 25, 2024, at the age of 100. She has shared the memories of those early Hinton years in a book called “A
Little Girl from Hinton.”
Anna Mae with her husband, Russell and their six children moved to Western Hills in Cynthiana in 1956. Recently she lived at Pleasant Meadows, Frankfort, Kentucky, but her heart and memories were always with her many friends in Cynthiana.
She has five living children, Sue [David] Fultz, Jean Edwards, Wayne [Kathy] Currans, Mike [Angie] Currans, and Gregg [Shelia] Currans. Her husband, Russell and son, Gerald preceded her in death. She had one deceased Son-in-law Charlie Edwards. She has 14 living grandchildren and one deceased grandson Rusty Ewalt, and she has 36 great-grandchildren and one deceased great-grandchild David Turkington, 21 great-great grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews. She was a lifelong member of Hinton United Methodist Church and attended the Cynthiana First United Methodist Church for many years.
Always active, Anna Mae played golf, bowled, and walked three miles a day most of her life. When she was well into her eighties, she was still walking in the annual Bluegrass 10K in Lexington, Ky. Anna Mae won many golf trophies playing in the Central Kentucky Women’s Golf Association tournaments. She also earned several bowling trophies and awards with different bowling teams.
For several years she owned and operated the Ra-Cur [Russell Ann-Currans) Shop on Pike Street. In this children’s clothing store, she loved meeting families with children, and treasured those memories and those dear people.
Anna Mae was very creative. In her early years, she belonged to the Harrison County Homemakers and made many household items, e.g. trays, woven stools, etc.- items still treasured by her family. Then for many years, until she could no longer see well enough, she
made hundreds, maybe thousands, of now-treasured ceramics - including making Christmas ornaments every year for each family member for approximately forty years– often making 50-60 ornaments a year - ornaments still placed on each family tree every year.
Anna Mae, “A Little Girl from Hinton,” proudly and gratefully called Cynthiana her home. No one ever loved their hometown and its residents more than Anna Mae loved Cynthiana. She reared her six children here, welcomed their friends and her friends in her home and life. She proudly stood at her husband’s side as they built hundreds of homes in and around Cynthiana. She played and prayed with her many close friends. She laughed and cried and lived a blessed life here in her wonderful Hometown. Thank you, Cynthiana, for the love, the friendship, and the memories. Thank you, God, for her wonderful life of 100 years!!
Funeral services will be held Monday April 8, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Ware Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to her service from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., also at the Ware Funeral Home. Pastor and son, Dr. Michael Currans will preside over the service and burial will be in Ravens Creek Cemetery, Hinton, Ky.
