Obituary for Doris Ann Montgomery (Hicks)

Doris Ann (Hicks) Montgomery, age 87, of Lexington, KY, passed away on February 18, 2021. Family and friends are invited to attend the graveside service which will be held on March 28, 2021 at 2:00 pm, in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Doris was born on July 2, 1933, to Rev. John K. Hicks and Jessie (Clay) Hicks.
Doris was an elementary school teacher in the mid-1950’s. Then in 1954, she married her one true love, James Ray Montgomery of Mt. Olivet, Ky. Together they raised a family – stayed devoted to each other, their faith in Jesus and to serving in their church.
Being a minister’s daughter during the Great Depression, taught her how to be thrifty and conservative in maintaining her household. She was also an excellent cook. Her skills in country cooking were picked up from her maternal grandmother, Thursa (Crase) Clay of Whitesburg, KY, and her mother. These traditional recipes have been passed down to her daughters and will continue to live on through their children. She loved crafts and readily took classes to learn how to do things like ceramics and candy making. She always remembered the birthdays of those around her and would sing a birthday song to you each year. She loved her grandchildren.
Even though she was already in hospice when news came that her very first great-grandchild was conceived, she managed to hang in fiercely for months in order to see that little one before she departed. Right before she passed away, little Violet arrived. So Doris was free to go on to heaven – having seen that the next generation of her family was on the scene.
She is survived by daughters: Beverly (Montgomery) Buchholtz, and Shelley (Montgomery) Bailey; grandchildren: Jennifer Buchholtz, and Benjamin Buchholtz; great-grandchild, Violet Buchholtz; sisters: Barbara (Hicks) Doyle and Linda (Hicks) Lakes.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James Ray Montgomery who passed away on July 15, 2005. Parents, John and Jessie Hicks; Brother, William Hicks; Daughter, Mindy Dawn Montgomery; as well as several miscarried children who are all now with her in heaven.
The family would like to express gratitude to Taras Isom, for his care and concern for our mother as her neighbor of many years. She was so grateful for you.
Instead of floral remembrances, the family suggests that donations can be made to: Transforming Ministries, P.O. Box 215, Lloyd, FL 32337, to honor Doris Montgomery’s memory. View and sign the guest book www.warefuneralhome.com.
