Obituary for Hall Moore Kinney

Hall Moore Kinney, 91, Cynthiana, died at his residence on April 25, 2023. Hall was born in Sunrise, Harrison County, Kentucky, on January 17, 1932, to the late James Moore and Lillian McGladdery Kinney. Hall fondly remembered his young life in Sunrise, surrounded by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins and helping his Papaw Kinney on the farm and his Granddaddy McGladdery at his mill. His family moved to Cynthiana in 1942, where he was an avid multisport athlete and student at Cynthiana High School. He attended Georgetown College from 1950-1954, where he majored in English and History, was captain of the varsity basketball team, and was a leader in student government and Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity. After college, he served in the Army and was stationed in Japan, a memorable period of his young adulthood and the source of many stories that began “When I was stationed in Japan…..”

Hall returned to Cynthiana in 1956 and began a career in Education, first at Harrison County High School and later for the Kentucky Department of Education, traveling the state administering Title 1 federal funding.

In 1960, he married Sarah Swinford, to whom he was married for 62 years. Together, they embarked on their Masters’ Degrees in English at the University of Kentucky, where Hall taught English as a Graduate Assistant. Hall earned his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Kentucky in 1972. Following his early time in Education, Hall embarked on a career in banking, first at Harrison Deposit Bank and later at the National Bank of Cynthiana and Farmers National Bank. A third career pivot found him as the primary administrator for Edgemont Manor Nursing Home and Grand Haven Nursing Home. More recently, he served as ombudsman at Grand Haven. Although these opportunities were not related, Hall was very proud of his years of service to lifelong friends, young and old, and to the business community of Cynthiana.

Hall was a true Renaissance Man, as comfortable discussing literature, as on a horse, as on the golf course, as in the board room. He loved to teach (“pontificate” as he liked to say) and inspired students teaching college English courses for Maysville Community College, Licking Valley Campus, as well as the Men’s Sunday School Class at Cynthiana Presbyterian Church (the latter for more than 50 years). Hall had an impeccable radio voice and was a color commentator for football and basketball at Harrison County High for many seasons. He also enjoyed working on the family farm, managing the Cynthiana Country Club, and “pottering around” his home on Pike Street. In more recent years, Hall, Sarah, and his sister, Faye, enjoyed afternoon laughs during their weekly “Wine and Whine” gatherings.

Hall is survived by his wife, Sarah; his daughter Elizabeth (Tom) Korona; his daughter Ann Jouett (John) Brenzel; his grandsons Joseph, Peterson, and David Korona and William and Jack Brenzel; his sister, Connie (Mike) Geon; his sisters-in-law, Ann Swinford Dunn and Alice Swinford Kolbe; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Charlotte Collins and Elizabeth Faye Smith. Hall and his family were especially appreciative of their caregiver, Paula Anderson, and many other supportive caregivers.

A visitation will be held May 7, 2023, from 1:00-3:00 pm at Ware Funeral Home. Donations in his memory may be made to Harrison County Board of Education designating the Harrison County Family Resource Center in the memo line.
