Obituary for Robert Raynes Porter

The earthly journey of our husband, dad, and papaw Robert Raynes Porter (Bob) 78 of Carlisle, KY ended peacefully at his home on February 12, 2022. Bob was born in Hanover, NH on September 3, 1943, and was the son of William Myron and Virginia Raynes Porter of Norwich, VT.
A 1961 graduate of Hanover High School, Bob went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree from Keene State College and Master’s Degree from Montclair University. He taught Industrial Arts at Whitingham High School in Whitingham, VT and Warwick Valley High School in Warwick, NY. While a teacher in Warwick for 30 years he coached football, golf, softball, and skiing. His love of skiing combined with the skills of his student skiers led his team to a New York State record of 100 consecutive wins. He always believed that to build a great ski team you have to start the children at a young age, so he and his wife Ruth taught ski lessons to children at a small park in Warwick. That program then grew into the Sunday Family Ski Races at the Mt Peter Ski Area which Bob directed for 20 years. He was also very proud of serving as a volunteer official at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. While in Warwick Bob was a volunteer fireman and active member and Captain of Excelsior Hose Company #1. He also contributed his time and building expertise as a volunteer at the Kingwood Methodist Church Camp in Hancock, NY. Bob grew up in a family of home builders in Norwich, VT. He worked alongside his dad and uncle learning the home building trade. Combining that knowledge with his education, he established his own building company Robert R. Porter Builder in Warwick. He constructed homes in and around the community.
Bob’s journey then took him to San Antonio Texas where he was an instructor in Construction Technology for 10 years at St Phillips College. He also enjoyed his volunteer work as a team leader with Christmas in April, a non-profit organization that helps the community improve the homes in which they live.
His life journey began in Vermont and ended in Kentucky where he lived for 20 years while enjoying and supporting the accomplishments of his granddaughter Kasey and playing with his tractors on his Oddville, KY farm.
Bob survived by his wife of 57 years Ruth Thompson Porter; his children, James Porter of Arvada, CO, Debby Dunn and her husband Steve Dunn of Florence, KY; his granddaughter Kasey Dunn of North Hollywood, CA; his sister, Lois L. Green of Norwich, VT. His brother LCPL Richard C. Porter preceded Bob during the Vietnam War. In addition, Bob leaves nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews who he dearly loved.
Friends are welcome to celebrate Bob’s life with his family and friends on Wednesday, February 16 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Ware Funeral Home in Cynthiana, KY.
A graveside memorial will be held at the Hillside Cemetery in Norwich, VT on June 4, 2022, at 2:00 PM.
